English Language Arts at TLA Academy

TLA Academy's English Language Arts program helps learners strengthen the foundational skills they need to become confident readers, writers, and communicators. Through small-group instruction, hands-on activities, literature, writing, and interest-based learning, students are encouraged to develop their skills while discovering the joy of language.
Course Overview
English Language Arts learning activities focus on developing both language comprehension and expressive communication. Instruction is adapted based on each learner's existing skills and may include phonics and decoding, reading fluency and comprehension, handwriting, vocabulary, introductory grammar, and written composition.

Whenever possible, students' personal interests and learning from science, social studies, projects, and enrichment activities are incorporated into literacy experiences, helping children see reading and writing as meaningful tools they can use across their day.
​
Course topics are informed by the Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning (SOL) while allowing flexibility to meet students at their individual learning levels.

Phonological & Phonemic Awareness — recognizing and working with sounds in spoken language

Phonics & Decoding — connecting letters and sounds to develop reading skills

Reading Fluency — developing accuracy, expression, and confidence while reading

Reading Comprehension — understanding, discussing, and responding to texts

Vocabulary & Language — expanding word knowledge and expressive communication

Handwriting & Written Expression — developing letter formation, sentences, and written ideas

Grammar & Language Conventions — exploring age-appropriate sentence structure, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar

Composition — learning to organize and communicate ideas through drawing, dictation, sentences, and longer written pieces as appropriate
What Learning Looks Like
ELA at TLA is designed to be interactive, meaningful, and responsive to the learner.

A class might include a literacy warm-up, teacher-led mini lesson, shared reading, phonics activities, literacy games, handwriting or writing practice, small-group work, storytelling, and opportunities to discuss and share ideas.
​
Rather than expecting every child to complete identical work, activities can be adjusted so learners participate in a shared topic while working at an appropriate instructional level.
Connecting Literacy Across the Day
Reading and writing don't happen only during ELA.
​
Students may write about a science experiment, research a country during TLA World Travelers, create instructions for a project, read about an animal they are studying, label a LEGO design, or write about something that matters to them.
​
These connections give students opportunities to practice literacy for a purpose and reinforce skills across different learning experiences.
